About US

We would like to share additional information about our background and the origins of the Royal Rat Hostel.

As passionate travelers, we identified a gap in affordable lodging options in Placencia, prompting us to convert our space into a hostel that embodies our travel experiences. After finalizing the required documentation and completing renovations, we proudly opened our doors in June 2022, ready to host our first guests. The name “Royal Rat Hostel” is inspired by the gibnut, a local rodent that resembles a hybrid of a pig and a rat. This distinctive animal is not only featured in local cuisine but also carries a fascinating history; it is reported that during her visit to Belize in 1985, the Queen of England was presented with a gibnut, which has since led to the tradition of sending one to her each Christmas.

I originate from England but moved to New Zealand 25 years ago, where I encountered Mark, a local New Zealander. Following our marriage, we began a journey of discovery that led us to Belize, attracted by its English-speaking culture and Caribbean charm. Now, after six years of residing here, we greatly appreciate our life within this lively community. Mark, an adept carpenter, built the hostel with help from locals, while I oversee the administrative duties to ensure our establishment runs efficiently.
