Bus and Boat Schedule to Royal Rat Hostel, Livingston, Puerto Barrios and Puerto Cortes

By Air

Reaching Placencia by air is straightforward, as there is a small national airport located just a five-minute drive from the hostel. Please remember that we offer a pickup service for a nominal fee of $10.00 BZD. I have included the websites for Tropic Air and Maya Airlines for your convenience.

Getting Here by Bus

Reaching Placencia is straightforward, as there are two bus companies available for your convenience. While you have access to Wi-Fi, please remember to enter our address into Google Maps, allowing you to disembark the bus directly outside our hostel. The journey from Belize City takes approximately five hours.

Going to Livingston or Puerto Barrios

To commence your journey, you may either hitchhike to the village from outside the Royal Rat Hostel or request a taxi service. Upon reaching Placencia Village, board the Hokey Pokey boat to Independence, which departs from the M&M gas station situated in the town center. There is a link for the hokey pokey timetable and the fare of $11.50 BZD. After arriving in Independence, you have the option to either walk for 15 minutes to the bus stop or take a taxi, which costs approximately $10.00 BZD. From there, board a bus to Punta Gorda, which takes about 1.5 hours and costs $9 BZD. When you arrive on the bus, inform the driver that your destination is Livingston, and he will drop you closer to the port. You will need to purchase a ticket for the ferry to Livingston, with the option to travel to Puerto Barrios as well. The ferry departs at either 9:30 AM or 2:30 PM, with a one-way fare of $100 BZD. After obtaining your ticket, ensure that you pay the Belize exit fee of $40.00 BZD and receive your exit stamp. Also note immigration is at the port. For the bus time table from Independence to Punta Gorda please click the link on this page. This trip can be done in one day.

Heading to Puerto Cortes

The boat operates weekly from Placencia to Puerto Cortes every Friday, with a return journey from Honduras on Mondays. Passengers are advised to arrive by 8:30 AM for check-in and ticket purchase, which costs 150 BZD, although the boat departs at 9 AM. The initial stop is at Mango Creek/Independence Creek, followed by an extended stop at Big Creek, where an immigration officer boards to conduct relaxed passport checks. An exit fee of 7.50 BZD for Belize is required, payable in cash to the immigration officer to receive the necessary stamp. The boat departs from Belize for Honduras at 11 a.m. and the journey takes approximately two hours. Unfortunately, there is no online schedule available; however, the Hokey Pokey boats operate in Placencia Village, adjacent to the M&M petrol station.
